Spyros Gerousis

I am a filmmaker and visual anthropologist based in Athens, Greece. My work explores the intersections of culture, migration, and identity through documentary film and ethnographic photography. Drawing from the traditions of visual anthropology, I treat the camera not merely as a recording device but as a tool for dialogue — a means of understanding the lived experiences of communities at the margins.

As music has been central to my life and creative practice, I also direct, film, and edit music videos, bringing the same ethnographic sensibility to more experimental and collaborative formats. I also work in commercial videography and photography, creating visual content for clothing brands and other creative industries.

I have extensive experience collaborating with universities, cultural institutions, and NGOs, and as an educator, I have contributed to award-winning projects that bridge research, creativity, and community engagement. One such project is The GSA Remembers (DSA Erinnert), which participated in an international competition funded by the German Ministry of Foreign Affairs on the involvement of German schools around the world with the Nazi regime. Our group of students won first prize.

My documentary work has taken me across the world — from the mountainous villages of central Greece to the favelas of Brazil, from the shipping routes of the new Silk Road to the contested landscapes of Southern Europe. Each project is grounded in long-term fieldwork, close relationships with subjects, and a commitment to representing the complexity of the worlds I enter.

I hold a degree in Social Theology from Athens and a master’s degree in Visual Anthropology from Manchester. My films have been screened at festivals and academic conferences internationally, and my first film, Every Single Day, was broadcast on national television.
